Greece: Poros-town on the island of Poros

Katerina’s Top 5 Things To Do On Poros

One of my friends recently called me from America and told me about her dream, in which she was back on Poros. When she woke up she could not remember much, but having ‘been’ on Poros made her day and made her smile the entire time. I realized how powerful memories of our holidays are and how they can make us feel happy. I know all of you can’t visit Poros right now, but I hope this blog about my Top 5 Things To Do On Poros will give you similar dreams as my American friend and put a smile on your face.

1. Walk to the clock tower

One of the nicest things to do on Poros is to walk high up to the clock tower of Poros-town and enjoy the view. I have done that countless times, alone or with friends. It never ceases to amaze me how beautiful the view is up there. Seeing the port and the small boats crossing to Galatas; Be mesmerized by the anchored boats that move on the waves and the luscious green of the pine tree forest of Kalavria (the bigger island of the 2 islands that form Poros). The combination of the green colours and the sparkling blue sea is just amazing.

Looking at the horizon ahead is even more touching when you discover the silhouette of the ‘sleeping lady’, as we call her. ‘She’ is the shape of the mountains that together look like a lady sleeping on her back. In the evenings the sun sets behind this mountain formation, creating one of the most breathtaking sunsets that I have ever seen. A lot of people agree with me. Depending on the time of the year, the sun sets in different places, beautifully changing this view all the time.

2. A stroll through the port of Poros

The second most beautiful thing to do is to take a walk through the port of Poros. A nice relaxing stroll either early in the morning, as the sun is rising or late in the afternoon when the sun starts to set behind the sleeping beauty. Watch the houses change colour because of the changing light and look at the small boats in the harbour. Walk all the way to the cross at the south entrance of the port, from where you have a breathtaking view over Poros-town.

3. Swimming

Third is a lovely swim on one of our small but very cozy beaches. Feel the sea giving you a nice cool hug while the sun washes you with light and warmth. I can’t wait to do that myself, in a few months I certainly will! Can you imagine having such a refreshing dive into the sparkling blue sea, then returning to your beach chair and enjoying another sip of your summer cocktail? Ah, I am longing myself to share those fantastic moments with you my friends.

4. Have an ouzo with a little meze

The fourth thing you have to make sure that you enjoy during your time in Poros is having an ouzo with a nice little meze; As an aperitif or a way to spend an entire evening. At Odyssey, in any special ouzeria or tavern next to the sea. What is even better, while enjoying your ouzo and meze, is to watch the people passing by, see the little boats sway on the waves, hear the sounds of Greek life and the smell of the hills and olive-tree forests.

5. Walk the backstreets of Poros-town

My fifth recommendation is to walk the backstreets of Poros-town, through those narrow alleys that will guide you up the small hills and offer you colourful glimpses of little house yards, mysterious doors, well maintained flowers in pots and beautiful balconies. For sure in those narrow, cool and friendly streets that form a labyrinth of smells and colours, you will find one of these small and beautiful churches with the door half open. Don’t make the mistake of just passing by and not enter that little heaven on earth. All of those churches are well taken care of by the people of the neighbourhood; They are clean and you will always be able to light a candle (please leave some money in exchange for your candle). Light a candle for your loved ones and say a prayer. It’s a moment to feel grateful for being able to return to Poros.

To think it was less than two months ago when we saw you and Rik and enjoyed the pleasure of Poros and of course your company!

Little did we think the world would have changed so much and so quickly.

Love from Turkey hope it will not be too long before we can go back to Poros our ‘Home’ in Greece.

Poros is a quiet Greek island that makes for a nice destination when visiting Greece. It is every bit as pretty as some of the larger places, and the size of the island gives it a homey feel. It is an excellent place to relax and enjoy the best of what Greece has to offer!
